lane end farm whitburn
hello can any wandering Sanddancers help me to find where Lane End Farm was located in Whitburn ...one branch of the family tree ..William, Bell and Frances Graham were on the 1881 census as living there..but I cannot find it on any of the old local maps /gazeteers around that time with a reference to the location of said farm...It was possibly in Shields then as the boundaries keep changing( like here in Biddick Hall)

I've been looking at a map of Whitburn dated 1862 and can't find it listed anywhere. In those day Whitburn covered a large area, up to West Boldon, Cleadon Park, Brockley Whins, Biddick Hall and part of Harton.
It is interesting to note; that there were only those thee members of the Graham family living on the farm; so it must have been a very small one.
Their neighbours on the census form have addresses listed as Biddick Hall Farms, Farding Lake Farm, Cleadon Park and Reahs Lane, so take your pick as there were lots of small farms (and large ones) dotted around all over the Whitburn area. The only reference to Lane End I could find was Lane End Gate, which is pretty close to where Sunderland FC have their Academy.

I obviously don't go as far back as that Baldy, the Farding Lake farm would have been at Marsden where Redwell school was, I think, hence Lake Ave and Farding Square I believe Jarrow Pete has talked about this in the past.
The farms in Whitburn now are Colwell's who have the caravan site, Turners, Henderson's and shieldie.

That's a fact mind. Being from Shields originally, I am looked upon as bit of a freak around these parts, as both of my eyes are at the same height.Cisco wrote:sless wrote:is that before all of whitburn were interbred
Probably Sless, best thing thing that happened to Whitburn was been made part of South Tyneside and a few Shields people moved in to break the blood up a bit.
