I am doing my family tree and my great grandfather's occupation is boilersmith. As far as I know he worked for the railways and then the Jarrow Tram Company. Anyone know what a boilersmith is/was?

A boilersmith was what is now known as a boiler maker. A smith is someone who works with metal of course; and we all know what a boiler is (no sarky remarks please) so he was a metal worker on boilers i.e boilermaker.
Now my brain is hurting after that. (So it's just a tiny pain)

I was going to say that the two jokes (?) above should not be posted on the old codgers board; before I realised that they do fit into the category of historical interest!
