the mariners
Ive always said a town the size of shields could easily have a team
worthy of the first division.
I would love nothing better than seeing the gypsies green turned into
a little stadium
worthy of the first division.

Re: the mariners
No it's too late I'm afraid, everybody is a Premier League fan these days. Even in the 20s and 30s when there was nothing else to do Shields struggled to get decent gates; that's why they went to Gateshead the first time.mr-angry wrote:Ive always said a town the size of shields could easily have a team

I was a Mariners' supporter when a schoolboy (they were affectionately known as the 'Babes' then). Chris Marron; Middlemiss; Rutherford; Hassan; Kilgallon; Hughie Watson. I was too early for Len Smith or goalies Lemon and Chicken. We even went to reserve games. Then my Dad (a Newcastle fan) sportingly took me to watch Sunderland, and my loyalties became dual.
Shields once beat Chelsea 5-0 when in the second division in the '20s (there was a howling gale at Horsley Hill).
Non-league teams - Stevenage etc. - do pretty well in places like Herts because there's no major team in the entire county. South Shields is squeezed between Newcastle and Sunderland. I once thought it was the largest place not to have a major team, but I've learned that Dudley and Croydon have more population.
Shields used to play in green and red stripes. Clash! Clash!

Crystal Palace are generally regarded as the team from Croydon.Jerry wrote: I once thought it was the largest place not to have a major team, but I've learned that Dudley and Croydon have more population.

I thought Shields played in green shirts with red sleeves Arsenal style or was it red with green?
Shields often played in a green shirt with a dark red collar, I mean wide, like a horse's collar, a bit like West Ham shirts. I think the arms were green. I liked the red and green stripes on a silky shirt better. In my experience they were unique.
I've never heard Palace supporters linking themselves with Croydon. Sarf Larnen, yes

This green strip they played in.
Do you think that if they had gone the whole hog and got camoflaged strips they might have scored more goals.
You could just imagine the opposing side scratching their heads.
"Where have South Shields Footballers gone?"
and suddenly out of nowhere they are tackled the ball mysteriously makes it way to the other end and the opposition are one nil down.
They could have camoflaged the Goal as well thus making it harder for the opposition to score.
