does any one remember what happened to people who in todays terms were Not quite right.This was in the late 1940,s/1950,s.
i am trying to trace a young lady (in the 1940,s/1950,s) Name of Lavinia,later reported drowned in the Marine lake.D.O.B approx 1930.

A lot of them went into large institutions. There was a mental hospital at Prudhoe in Northumberland also Cherry Knowle on the outskirts of Sunderland. Remember my mother saying 'you will have me in Cherry Knowle' when we were playing her up. There was also a hospital at Monkton in Jarrow for the mentally ill.

I thought there was one at Boldon or was that just a workhouse?

I think the place at Boldon started life as a work house and changed into an orphanage.
