I've seen several of the photos posted above before. I'm curious as to the
source of the photos as obviously you weren't around at the time they were
taken comeonthen. I know that you said you had about 4000 of them,but
where did you get them from mate.

I was writing a book and wanted all photos to illustrate it but could not find the ones that I wanted until after it was published. I decided that it would be a good idea to collate all the old photographs in one place. So every book, every paper and every source I could find I would scan the photo with a reference as to the source, publisher, photographer, title of book, ISBN and exactly what can be seen on each photograph. With the photos I have took myself I have ammassed a good collection.
I have been going out for a number of years now just taking photos of the streets of the town, my intention is to have a photogaph of every street and every building for the future generations. As far as copyright is concerned I use the ones that have run out of copyright and the ones I have permission to use. As for the others that I cannot supply I can give all the details as to how to obtain it and from where.
The photos have helped me enormously with the book that I am writing now. A page of description cannot beat a good photo in the appropriate place of the book.

A good photo can say a lot more than any amount of words.
It must have took you forever to amass such a collection.

A lot of time and a lot of effort but well worth it. There must be hundreds more photos out there to be collated and indexed and put on a data base. I encourage people to send me photos that I can add to my database. People are always looking for a particular photo but cannot always find it.
A copy of the photos I have taken myself are stored in the local history section of the library for people to look at and to have copies of. I believe that photos should be shared. If you are doing a family tree then photos of your ancestors or the place where they lived would add greatly to your tree.

But I think you've been beaten by Google Earth with street view.

Wished GE was about in the 50's 60's...imagine being able to take a visual trip around shields.
