It must have been a losing battle trying to keep your washing clean if you lived there.
Washday Mayhem in Aldbrough Street
Re: Washday Mayhem in Aldbrough Street
Brian, I couldn't agree more about washday in Aldbrough St. We had moved down to Southampton where our son was born in 1968. As a baby we brought him back to visit his great gran, Adelaide Hambling at 77 Aldbrough St. The garden backed onto the area shown and we would hang out his baby clothes and 'terry' nappies and they would come in again scruffier than when they went out. Thanks for the pic.

Amazing picture, my Grandad used to be engine driver from Tyne Dock to Consett carrying iron ore.
Think he retired about 1965, used to rell me stories of driving in pitch black during the bombing raids WW2 when trying to bomb Tyne Dock Arches.
Any more pictures would be great.

my granda used to be a shunter on that line, we still have his pocket watch, as for the top photo not many people will remember this but some naughty boys once decided to play around with the handle that winds the steam train on its tracks around in a circle, but they went to far and the train fell of the tracks into the pit, lets put it this way a few small boys did not sleep for a few nights in sima lol
