cleadon park sanatorium

hello there
been looking for informaion & images on the old sanatorium at cleadon park & came across you guys.
all i can remember is when i was a nipper in the 70's we used to climb the
wall & pinch the crab apples!!!
the place was pretty derelict then but it seemed like a lovely building.
could anyone shed any light on how long it was a sanatorium,what it was before & where i can find any pictures of the place?

hi Vanman welcome to our boards, sorry but i dont have any info on the building for you but we do have a very old photo of cleadon park on our main website which would have been behind the building

i saw that particular photo but i dont think it was the sanitoriums grounds. it looks very much like 'the dell' in cleadon park itself (just below crows island

) but i may be mistaken.
i've found out the building was used as a hospital from 1921-1979 but can't find out what it was before then.
if anybody knows the name of the place before then could you please post

I believe it was "Cleadon Hall" before it became a sanitorium.

I wonder if this was where my mother was as a child? She told me she had to attend a sanotorium/school at cleadon, because she was chesty & cleadon was "In the Country". She said the kids would spend some time on a glazed veranda, lying on wooden loungers with a rug over them. Then a nurse would come around and give each of the kids a spoonfull of codliver oil.

vanman you are right about the photo it is the dell, but will keep a eye open for any more from that area

I think I remember it being referred to as the 'Open Air School'. Or was that something else? Anybody else hear this?

Yes! I can remember a school in Cleadon park being refered to as the "Open air School" it is more then likely the same place.

i think i remember hearing that if you had breathing problems or TB etc then you were shipped of to this place

In the early 50's my cousin had TB and was shipped out so I would imagine it would be there unless there was one nearer Jarrow but I couldn't have been far as I can't remember anyone complaing about travelling to see him.

That's right Jimmy, after all a sanitarium is a place where they treat infectious diseases. Cleadon sanitarium was mainly dealing with chest patients. I don't know if it was called the open air school because people in those days did not talk about TB or the big "C" they were just not mentioned. In 1954 I had TB in the lungs and spine but I was sent to Hexham General Hospital as they specialised in spine problems then. If someone had TB or Cancer in those days people acted as though you had the "Clap" and the family became social outcasts. How times have changed.

Iv'e just had it pointed out to me that, it was my oldest brother who went there. That would make it late 40s early 50s.

the pic on the website is of the Dell, looking at the pic on the left used to have some steps, and left of that there was some tennis courts.

On the right of the Pic Lead to Crows Island.

As for the 'Sana', As we used to call it was located behind Cleadon Park Comp.
it was demolished around 1979/80
me Dad used to get the windows too he made a greenhouse out of them.

I pinched the brass taps and weighed them in with me mate browney.

Made a small fortune HE HE HE

Hi,

resurrection!

The sanatorium and the open air school were different places.

The san was in Cleadon Park - it used to be a stately home.

The open air school was further up by the Lonnen and Cleadon Hills.

The open air school was on the Lonnen but now has a housing estate on the plot where it was , The sanitorium was inbetween Cleadon Park School and the Dell which also has been built on . We used to sneak out of school round the back of the sanitorium also used to go there to visit my uncle as in latter years it was used as a convelesant home .
