Re: Derby Street Baths
Gazza 1960 you must have been starting Westoe as I was leaving if that is the year of your birth.
Re: Derby Street Baths
There was a church on the left side of Derby Street as you walked away from the baths, the back butted onto the railway at the back of the presbetary gardens of St. Bedes church, it was just after the back lane from Westoe Road, sorry I do not know the name or denomination it served.

There was a church there, where the school is now, but I don't know it's name.

Re: Derby Street Baths
Circa 1957, I remember having been with my classmates to Derby Street baths. On the way back to Ocean Road Senior School, a few of the lads misbehaved. On getting back to school, the whole class was lined up and caned on each hand: 'two of the best' as we called it. On complaining that such treatment was unfair, we were told to place the blame on those who had caused the trouble. Ah, no 'human rights' in those days I don't believe we suffered long term harm, and most of us left school with fond memories of our treachers - including those who used the cane!

Re: Derby Street Baths
I think Glebe Methodist Church was on Westoe Road beside the Westoe bridges at the top of Chi Road, new housing now occupies the place where it once stood.
I seem to remember a stone masons being opposite on Imeary Street, I wonder if that is still there.

Re: Derby Street Baths
I served my aprenticeship with Milton Swales just across the little cobbled back-lane from Everrets in Imeary St.sadly they have both been demolished and grassed over, along with many other parts of Shields which could have actually been saved. but instead the powers that be seem to be determined to destroy the last remaining character of the town. I wonder whats next? The old town hall in the market, or St. Hildas perhaps?
