i have searched and searched for a good picture of south palmerston street for years and havent found one
has any kind soul out there got one
i was born in number 63 south palmerston street in 1968
and would also love to hear from anyone who knew my parents brian and patricia plews
im doing the family tree thing but have a major lack of photos
hope someone can help

This photo was taken in the 60s but if it was not for the people in the background it could have been taken decades before the 60s. I remember the knife grinders from the fifties coming around the streets in Stoke. Fascinating to the kids.

I knew a George Plews who worked at Brigham & Cowan's in the 70's

thanks but we dont have any george plews in the family as far as im aware
there are two main streams of plews in the area ,ones who are related to the brewery family and those who arent (unfortunately ) we arent lol

I was born in this area in the early fifties and cant remember any one going round sharpening scissors and this photo looks to me to be a bit older than the 60s.

Well I was born 1948 and can remember the knife sharpener coming round also the rag and bone man with horse and cart, so I can well believe its 1950s.

Now I don't want to start a war but.........
This photo was given to me by the photographer himself, George Wastell (sorry George I should have given you credit in the first place) who told me that it was taken in the 1960s and that he took it then and developed it then. He added that not many people get it's date right. I believe that it was taken in such a way to make it appear older.

so its deffinately that time

Looks right to me. I was born in the 1950s in John Williamson Street just a few yards away and we often got our knives and scissors sharpened by this fellow.

I,m outnumbered here so I probably wrong but I was born in West Walpole St in the early 50s and lived in John Willy right thro the 60s and I never saw him.Rag and bone man of course right thro the 70s.Maybe my alzheimers is kicking in but I,m gonna ask aboot.

A brilliant photo.I lived in Taylor St. until 1969 and remember the knife sharpener well .Does anyone have any old pics. of Taylor St. it would be great to see the place as it was all those years ago. I lived near the Corbridge St. end (145) and have fond memories of the place and the people.

My sister and Bro in law took over the Eskimo Slipper Factory and ran JoBell Fashions from there for a while.

I was at Rumbelows at the time, but used to do odd runs to London for them on days off etc.

So that would be approx 1976 ish .
