could someone tell me the reason for one lighthouse shining a white light and one a red light,
and what was the purpose of the groyne. be most grateful

I'm sure Pilot could give a more precise explanation, but for what it's worth...............
Probabably for the same reasons navigation light are red for port (Left) and green for Starboard (right)
in that having different colours would indicate which light you were actually looking at and therefore
help the travellor avoid collisions etc, and get to their destination more safely.
And even more so, if only one light could be seen.
The Groyne serves a similar purpose in that it provides additional visual indicators and hopefully will guide those travelling along
the river to actually stay on the river and not end up on the beach...... or come to rest at the bar in the Littlehaven Hotel.....
