oldest pub in south shields
could anyone tell me what the oldest pub still in use in shields is cheeeeeeeeers
Re: oldest pub in south shields
there is no proper answer to this question, as the alum house which is now a pub was a brewery a few hundred years ago, the marsden grotto has been around for a long time too but i think the best answer is a building that has only been used as a pub is the harbour lights on the lawe top

The date I have for The Ship is 1803 which would make it the oldist in South Shields

What about the Rose and Crown in Holborn? Is that still there?

Re: oldest pub in south shields
The old Rosie is still there, but I always though that this debate revolved around the Old Ship and The Westoe. They are the only two remaining coaching inns in South Shields and both have evidence of mounting stones.

There was a lot of mounting done at the back of the Nook pub according to one poster,
although in my case I would always need a mounting stone.
Re: oldest pub in south shields
thats why its a trick question, both the ship and westoe pubs have been rebuilt, so you could find its still the harbour lights is the oldest ORIGINAL pub still standing, even the rosie is not as old as you think
Re: oldest pub in south shields
This is not my list I dont know who did this but here you are.
1). Ship Inn Harton 1803
2). Marine 1871/72 (there was an inquest there in August 1872)
3). Adam and Eve Rebuilt c. 1873 (earlier pub there in 1827
4). Criterion 1875
5). Westoe Hotel 1875/6 on site of old Crown Inn
6). Brunswick 1879/80 (earlier pub there in 1848)
7). Pier 1879/80
8). Ship and Royal (then known as the Royal 1879/80
9).Chi 1881 (this again could have been rebuilt)
10). Lambton Arms 1885
11). County Hotel 1893 on site of Westoe Tavern 1829
12). Stags Rebuilt 1895 (earlier pub on site, dates back to 1859/60
A number of local pubs were either built or rebuilt in the 1890's e.g a pub called the Neptune was on the present site in 1859/60,
but the present building was built in 1901. (yes it is an old list)
The Britannia in Charlotte Terrace was built in 1898
The Cyprus was rebuilt in 1900, the original building was there in 1882
There was a beer house on the Lord Clyde site from 1870/71, but at present we do not know when it became a full public house
or whether this is the same building
The first directory for a pub called the Railway Inn In Coronation Street was in 1848, but again this could have been rebuilt.
As I said this is not my list but someone has gone to a lot of trouble doing it.
