Reminds me of years ago I read that during the 2nd world war this village used this German POW to tend to sweeping up the village square church etc. He managed to get some crocus bulbs from somewhere and aked if he could plant them on a hilly verge as you came into the village.
Luckily for him the war ended and he was repatriated back to Gemany.
It was only till the following Spring that the Crocuses came out. They spelt.
