Muhammed Ali married at Laygate mosque 1970 - remember??

Yea, sounds impossible but that's what we all thought when the Gazette arrived on our mat that night with the headline 'Muhammed Ali to wed in Shields'. (It wasnt April 1st) As I recall, a local boxing promoter went to the USA and persuaded the world boxing heavyweight champ to come to Shields and o...

..as long as you don't think Muhammed Ali visited the town in a UFO in 1970 and married a fairy to the wedding march played on kazoo by Billy Meths. (see 'South Shields legends- who remembers them' post)

Whoops! forgot to mention that the above post came under the heading of 'Ufo's visit the town in 1967'.. certainly a story of legendary status. Also, who remembers Muhammed Ali actually getting married at the Mosque in 1970! Crazy!! But True! Who remembers? Who was there? A nother cracking legend.

UFO's visit the town in 1967

Well, wether they werealiens or not, they most certainly did, for a hectic and concentrated week or so. Started with a classic sighting by a family at Tyne Dock who saw three Ufo's hovering above them. The Ministry of defence actually told the family that what they had seen was a weather balloon tha...

SOUTH SHIELDS LEGENDS - Who remembers them?

1. The legend of the faeries gold at Trow rocks. Seems a golden cup did in reality go to somewhere hidden in Westoe Village. May still be there! 2.Norman Skin. South Shields' first ever skinhead circa 1968. 3.Bill Meths aka Billy Roberts..famed street wanderer of no fixed address, played the kazoo. ...

He also appeared now and then on other occasional Tyne tees shows, perhaps the most memorable being on an artsyfarsty show called The Works where he did a sketch as a wacky magician invoking the spirit of beer 'n' tabs, another classic. Actually show of these snippets are collected on a short dvd whi...

He was on Check it out as Hootsi tabernacle, a spoof Californian leader of the Nebbist sect who was buying and having Marsden Rock flow over to the States. His hard dog, wearing Martens, featured with him as Foffo Spearjig as The Hard, on a Tube sketch. The bug*er got everywhere in those days!

St Cuthbert's treasure hidden at Westoe

Ok - one final recollection. Myself and two thers PW and TM managed to get underground at the site of the old Nunnery when renovation was taking place there. Luckily it unveiled a a level of structure under floor level and a convenient point of entry. When we got in there we followed a mazy passagea...

St Cuthbert's hidden treasure in Westoe Village

Actually, two other snippets I recall. During medieval times Westoe Village was owned by the monks of Durham, as was the surrounding area, thus making it truly easy to sneak Cuthbert on their own territory. Secondly, the South Shields legend of the faeries gold at Trow Rocks confirms that the golden...

St Cuthberts hidden treasure in Westoe Village

I can add a bit more to this topic. The South Shields town council invited Rs to a meeting behind closed doors to discuss the possibility of a tourism angle, but asked Rs if he would alter his findings slightly so that Cuthbert could be placed away from private property thus making it easier to fenc...
