South Shields 2004

Post by andysfootball »

I am coming to Shields for a holiday 20 years after my last trip home to England. I want to spend a bit of time looking at the changes but will only have a week or so.

Where's the best place to go nowadays (since Ruperts has closed!)?

Where's the new posh estates?

What's the best Indian Curry Shop (too old to do a runner anymore!)?

Any new things too see in the North East?

I haven't even seen the Metro Centre.

I used to drink in the County.

What's the best pubs nowadays?

Things would have changed heaps in 20 years.

Is a bottle of brown still 50p?

I wish!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, what's changed in the last twenty years? Not a great deal in South Shields, it will still be very recognisable to you. As far as the pubs and clubs go you might find places like Coyote Wild and Glow Cafe Bar, Breeze, Coast, Atlantic, Marsden Ratller, Sundial, Pukkah, Riverside Bar,
Rosie Malones etc a bit new. The clubs haven't changed a bit except Springs is now a health Club and the La Strada has been demolished.

Posh new estates? Try looking for the following, Cleadon Sanatorium, Redwell School, The Glebe Church, Westoe Bridges, Westoe Pit, The Deans Hospital, St. Oswin's Church. Come back in five years time and Asgrove will be gone as well!

Best curry house.......The Passage to India

I forgot about the new things to see in the North East.

North Shields (God's own dustbin) changed beyond recognition, the Parks Leisure Centre, Wet 'n' Wild, The Royal Quays, new housing all along the quayside, Bedford Street shopping centre.

Newcastle Quayside, a hotbed of activity, new buildings galore, new pubs galore. The Gate (was the Mayfair), Centre for Life, Discovery Museum, Eldon Garden, Sid James Park redeveloped.

Gateshead, the Quayside, Baltic Mills Art Gallery, the Millenium Bridge, the Music Centre, the Hilton Hotel, Saltwell Park brought up to date.

Sunderland, brand new town centre virtually (including Debenhams), great new transport interchange at Park Lane, the Metro, the Stadium of Light, Mowbray Park and it's Winter Garden.

Chester-le-Street, St. Cuthbert's shopping arcade, the Riverside cricket ground, the Riverside Park.

Durham, new crypt developments in the Cathedral, the new Prince Bishop's shopping centre, the Arndale centre.

Murton, Dalton Park shopping outlet centre.

Hartlepool, sea front completely changed, Jackson's landing, the Marina, H.M.S. Trimcomalee, the biggest store in the North of England.

Stockton, riverfront development, National White Water Rapids centre.

Middlesbrough, the Riverside Stadium, two new shopping arcades in the town centre.

Darlington, the Cornmill shopping centre.

I hope you are getting the picture about South Tyneside........we have a council with absolutely no vision or ambitions for the future!

You not recognise place.
Since Maggie Thatcher got in she pump lots of money nto north east.
It fared better under her than all labour governments put together.
Just look at sea front.
