you know the rasberry sauce used on icecream. Anyone know why this term is used or where it originated, it seems to be a northern thing.

It is also known as Dragons Blood in some parts of the North East.

Having been in the ice cream business for about thirty years I can say with the greatest confidence that I don't have a clue where the name "Monkeys Blood" originated from. I have heard one or two ridiculous reasons given for it but none worthy of posting on here.
I used to use four or five gallons a week of the stuff, probably even more; and it wasn't cheap for the good stuff. We also used others which included butterscotch, lime, banana and quite a few other flavours, plus chocolate vermicelli, 100s and thousands, and nibbed nuts. Spoilt for choice my customers were.

Not sure where the name is from, but for those who like it, it is made out of crushed beatles. Cochineal I think they are called. (Spelling may be wrong)

People often used to call it "Jungle Juice" as well, don't know why.

Also one or two people used to ask for "Bulls Blood"

Jimmy the same stuff will be in almost any confectionary foodstuff that is coloured pink or red. The darker the colour the more there is in it.
