South Shields Power Station
Hi Sanddancers,
I am a 'newbie' two new points i'm looking for informatio about, South Shields Power Station, West Holborn, parts of the old building still exist, however, The Shields Library have no worthwhile pictures, and Frederick Street, anyone remember the pharmacy in the middle of the top block, opposite the old Unionist Club.
Thanks for any info
Yours roverman1973
Re: South Shields Power Station
The only Chemist at Laygate which I know of was Dawsons but it wasn't on Frederick Street, there was a Chemist
further down Frederick Street called Darke's.
I used to play around the power station and glass works when I was a kid and swim in the river
there, how I didn't catch some terrible disease I don't know the river was filthy and full of raw
sewerage. You can find a not so good photo here:

How was the coal delivered to the powerstation.?
Re: South Shields Power Station
There were railway lines running to it which linked it with St Hilda and Westoe Collieries, andeddieg wrote:How was the coal delivered to the powerstation.?
there was a coal depot right next door to it as well fed by the same source. I had to look at an
old map to confirm it and it clearly shows the railway set up.

With regard to the pharmacy. Like Mr Smith I can remember Dawsons on Laygate where my grandma used to buy Ginger Wine essence then Darkes which was further down past the Eureka pub and across the road from Frederick Street Methodist church. I have a vague feeling there might have been a branch of Masons in the block opposite The old Unionist club. This firm had a few branches throughout Shields. King Street and Fowler Street were the other locations I can remember.

Hi Old Codgers,
Sorry for the delay in replying to my original post re : Power Station. I've had my hip replaced for the third time, and now recovered. Thanks for all of the info received, I can put to bed one myth, there were no rail connections what ever, I ofter cleaned the crane slip-rings on the jetty when coal was delivered by Stevie Clarke's Colliers. Ash removal was by Hann & Newby 30 cwt trucks and dumped ? where I know not. The Chemist's opposite the then Unionist Club, was my families, Mr. & Mrs. J. Robson, does that ring any bells ? Who went on to form Tyne, Blyth, and Wear Shipping Chemists, Ltd., and subsequently accquired D & B Walker (Shipping Chemists) Ltd., of South Eldon Street.
Ref ; river news, you must all know of the demise of Stephenson Clarke Shipping Company, what a sad loss to the comunity. Hope to hear from all of you with memories
Thanks
Dennis.
