What was the name of the Oil Rig disaster - not Piper Alpha- where a number of people from this area were killed. Think it was back in the late sixties. An old friend of mine from schooldays was one of those killed.

Re: Ocean Prince and MR.Capp
thanks for the report Pete but it does not seem to be the one I'm thinking of.Your report seems to indicate everyone was saved. The one I'm thinking of had a lot of people kiiled. Think it may have been off Norway.

Could it be this one ?

Can vaguely remember this, the only other accident apart from Piper Alpha that I can remember when Shields lads were killed is the helicopter crash in the Irish sea when they were going out to a rig. One of the casualties was a lad called Ahmed from Shields, but that was only 4 or 5 years ago.

Re: Ocean Prince and MR.Capp
Thanks for trying Pete but the one I'm thinking of was back in the sixties or early seventies. Think it was in Norwegian waters and some of the men were asleep in their quarters and could not escape. May have been an explosion caused it to sink. A good childhood friend of mine was one of the casualties. It was so upsetting because he was an only son and his mam and dad doted on him.
I was just thinking of him the other day when I was on the seafront. We all used to go to the beach together from the Church youth club

Thats the same one as I put the link to the newspaper article referring to it and Delilahcat has already stated that she does not think it was that one. Will keep on searching and see what else turns up, one thing it has shown me is that they deserve every penny they earn by working in the North Sea in winter.Mr Smith wrote:This is probably the one you mean Delilahcat. 123 killed

Re: Ocean Prince and MR.Capp
Thanks gents that's the one. Sorry pete I thought the link you posted was about the helicopter crash so didn't check it. As soon as I saw the name of the rig I remembered. The biggest surprise was finding out it was only 1980. Felt as if it happened much earlier.
123 killed and I think a fair few of them were from round here .RIP lads.
