Post by brian c »

Does anybody know anything about the Carruthers family in Shields in the 20/30s, and proberbly later, they were cousins of my father and were builders and plumbers (at least some of them were). :D

There is something here which may help you, it appears that Carruthers the builders built the boys high school.

Thanks, it looks promising so I'll check with my dad to see if he can remember anything about it but at 92 he might be a bit vague.

Dad did remember and also told me that they built a school and the fire station in Hebburn.

Apparently there were 5 brothers and sisters Jim who was the builder, Isobel, Tom, my Grandfather the waterboard inspector and the youngest Billy who was the workhouse plumber!

So they were probably quite wellknown at the time.

Carruthers builders used to be in Heugh terrace, of Mile end Rd. They built a few methodist churches, Brinky school, ext to Whiteleas club. Served my time there as a joiner.

Hallo yes the names Jim Mouat, started about 1964, a good bunch of lads there round about that time. A few names I can recall are Ray Bell, the Moffet brothers, Arthur, Tom and Albert, Charlie Lines, John Rutherford .Also Colin Miur who sadly has passed away. There are more but not sure of there surnames. Hope this is of help.
