Hi Rusty,if i'm not mistaken the church was in Garwood St.it looked more like a long hut than a church.

Only went to the Chi once, was it not nicknamed The flea Pit. Seem to remember they let you in if you had a glass jar to use as an entrance fee.

St Francis was in Garwood Street it backed on the railway line. In my time it was father Alderson, it was quite high church - incense everywhere. From memory it was a very nice church inside. There were at least two huts in the grounds one of them was the scout hut. I saw the Desperados play there in 1962 or thereabouts.

I went to Bert Alderson's scouts too. The guy was a corker, great with kids.

I was in the cubs (sixer of red six) not the scouts. The akela was a girl whose name I forget but she lived in Taylor Street.

Did you go on any of the church pilgrimages by bus to places like Ripon?

I remember Father Alderson very well. Although my family attended St Mary's church in South Eldon Street the two parishes were close and we attended St Francis' church on occasions. Like St Mary's it was very high church and I remember Father Alderson hearing my confession before my confirmation. In those days our social life, guides, brownies, girls club, youth club, revolved around the church as there was little other entertainment. I lived just over the road from the church and seemed to spend a great deal of my childhood there. Happy days!j

You could have mistaken us for left footers on a Sunday reeking of incense but it was Church of England alright. I have just remembered the young teenage organist who played for a while, she was great.
