Re: Anybody remember
Yea thats right, she is awful. Didn't really know dad too well, just vague memories x
Re: Anybody remember
Take it from me Chloe, Jack was one of the best. A very generous man without an enemy in the world.Chloe wrote:Yea thats right, she is awful. Didn't really know dad too well, just vague memories x
He didn't get on with his mother, despite all he did for her. I wasn't living in Shields any more when I
heard about him dying. I left Shields about the time Peggy was expecting the twins, that would be
sometime around 1965/66. Jacks biggest weakness was that he liked a bet on the horses, and he
smoked a hell of a lot, but as a man he was one of the best and lived for his family.
If Peggy is still around tell her I'm asking after her, just tell her that Dave Smith asked.
Re: Anybody remember
I dont speak to her much now, she told me many lies bout dad. I didnt even know he had brothers till 2003 then I found his brother Uncle Billy, he's loverly. I know dad lived in the Marsden inn (gambling) and was a regular at redcar races LOL, but thats it. He was a wonderful dad, from what I can remember of him. Mum lost the twins, so i'm his only one.
Bet you can remember those little pencils he had made silver with the shop name and a dog printed along the side, I still got one and I got his glasses, bless him x

Re: Anybody remember
Don't remember the pencils, but he used to buy keyrings, lighters and all sorts
of nick knacks with the shops name on them, he was a salesmans dream. No
matter what they were selling Jack could be persuaded to buy, he didn't know
how to say no.
I didn't know about him gambling in the Marsden Inn, he used to go to the
Companions Club when I was in Shields and he was a Freemason I believe.
Peggy was always an oddball and had Jack wrapped around her little finger.
It was a match I could never understand, they were so different in every way.
Anyway I wish you well and we'll no doubt have more to say at another time.

Re: Anybody remember
Hiya Anna, Its given me 2nd wind now to try and dig the truth out........... Gonna ring the companions club on Monday as I think dad was a founder member of some group there. Also need to find out what happened to his chain of shops.... I think I need to get to the bottom of things now xxxxxxxx
Re: Anybody remember
Chloe, you mentioned a shop in Mile End Road.
It's possible he opened that shop after I had left South Shields, if it ever was there.
The shop in Ridley Place in Newcastle he let go due to the landlord making an
enormous hike in the rent. I think the landlord wanted him out so that he could
let out the whole building to a Travel or Estate Agent, I can't remember which.
Western Approach went the same way. There were two floors to the property
and we only used part of the bottom floor. With a large increase in rent and
rates; it no longer became practical to run the business from there and show
a profit.
When I left South Shields he only had the shop in Wharton Street and the other
in South Frederick Street. Your Dad ran the Wharton Street shop and Peggy
the other.
Your dad never owned any of the shops, they were all rented properties; so
the only value they had was in; stock in hand and of course his good name.
So if you are wondering that maybe you should have had some inheritence
from any of the shops I would very much doubt if there would be anything
to inherit.
If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask, or send me a
pm if you feel it is too private to post on the boards.
