Good Old Binns

Post by hartman045 »

I am a bit busy at the moment so if you one of the many people who has sent me a PM my apologies for not responding straight away. I will get back to you later on tonight as I have to rush out now. I thought I had better post these first or I might forget.

Binns store in the year it closed, 1994 ish? What a miss that shop is. One of my girlfriends in 1960 worked there. The assistants used to dress all in black then. (She was a tall blonde and a 'cracker' ) But I digress

Two pics from1969-70ish. The lady who took these carried a 126 cartridge camera all the time and took hundreds of photos in the factory, which is of course Crompton Parkinson in River Drive(aka BurndeptLtd and Vidor Batteries) The bottom photo is as you can see, a view to the right of the first. This is a battery packing/assembly line (I think)

Bought my first stereo from that Binns store a Sanyo with smoked glass effect top and a weighted stylis. The speakers where seperate and plugged into the stereo unit and had wood effect cabinets with a thick gause type sound transparent material sounded great at the time, especially after being used to mono gramaphone player with a shilling on the arm to stop it jumping. I used to go to the record exchange on Imery Street to buy cheap LP's like the Age Of Atlantic, featuring Iron Butterfly and Led Zeppelin etc. lush.

Ive had some good stuff from Binns over the years. I bought my first colour television there. It was a Hitachi 17" set and it was brilliant. I also bought a Fisher music centre from them and that too was brilliant. As a young kid, I was a member of the Boys Brigade and the Skipper of My Company used to run the Butchery Department. I can remember passing the shop on a Saturday and getting a wave off him as He worked away, very happy days !

cheers.

If I remember correctly, the basement was in 2 sections with some sort of underpass joining both sides together.
During the Christmas period this was where Santa's sleigh was set up and where us kids would get to 'ride over the roof tops in the night sky' and for just a few minutes, it was all completely believable.

I used to love Binns, the Santa Grotto was amazing, great for kids. I also loved the going to the restaurant upstairs. Getting tea (in real tea cups) and cakes and little sandwiches, you felt dead posh :)

Aye, you couldn't ga'an down Shields on a Saturday wi'out popping into Binns and Woolies.
Binns was one of the only stores in Shields to have an elevator - can't think of any others.

It was a magical place, that basement, from when I was a little brat to the day I left Shields.
Sadly missed.

The Jarrow & Hebburn Co-op Emporium on Westoe Road had one (four floors).
Bit before your time though. I worked there from 1953 to 1956.
The building was later taken over by the Council and used as offices.

Hi baldy,

I barely remember that place as a store. It was council offices, as you say, for most of my memory.
Never saw where the elevator(s) was/were, so I guess they must've been blocked off from the public when it was converted to offices.
