Mr A still fine, 18 days since she hung her last pal up for burial, 18 days is a long time in ant terms. My grandchildren are due for their summer visit on Thursday I wonder if I should..........no its unthinkable........they will just have to steel themselves like me.

I could not resist it-I had to look up life spans for ants, as every time I opened this post i was feeling anxious for your little crawly friend.
I was going to say little black friend, but that could shock anyone not knowing we are talking ants.
The worker ants can live 1-2 years while the queens might last 3 years.
How old is your loner?

OMG 1 to 2 years, she came in March but all the others have died, the booklet that came with them said they live 2 to 4 months!!!!!!I recently got an e-mail from the supply company to say all my ants should have died by now so they sent information on how to buy new ones. I suppose there are thousands of different types of ant, mine are American ants, they are much bigger than English ants. I don't know if I can take all the worry for 1 to 2 years

The site I originally looked at was this one,
http://sonic.net/~petdoc/lifespan.htm
But I also found this on another site.
The life span of the ant varies from caste to caste, and species to species. the workers of some species live only for a few weeks, whereas other may live for several years. The queen of the tiny 'Pharaoh ant, Monomorium pharoanis, may live for only three months, but the queen of Lasius niger can live for up to 15 years or so. Incidentally, the record for ant longevity is held by a queen of L.niger who, in a German laboratory nest, lived for 29 years.
You should protest to the company, pilot. i think they have sold you some of these short lived ones. Tell them you want the 29 year variety.
