transporter bridge
am i right in thinking a Transporter Bridge was planned to cross the Tyne at South shields/North Shields ?

Yes you are right Rusty and here is the proof. I copied this about a month ago when I was doing some research for one of my web sites. If I come across unusual images or facts relating to South Shields I usually copy them for my Shields site.

There was a suggestion that a bridge could go from the top of Mile End Road across to North Shields, but as some already said, the port authorities quite rightly saw it could limit the size of ships using the Tyne and rejected the idea.

Apart from the Esso Northumbria ( amazed as a kid ) I don't think I've ever known a ship, especially nowadays that are as high as that.
