Barnes Road School

Post by trebor »

Does anybody have any photos of Barnes Road. Went there as a boy. Best days of me life. Mrs Hunter what a lovely lady and Mrs Tinnian small but terrifying. Backlanes, coal fires, outside toilets, marys corner shop that gave tick, Olsens second hand shop, fays cycles. Having nowt and not knowing it. Great.

Miss Marshall, Mrs Tinnian, Miss Welsbury/Mrs Haynes i remember, i still see one of the B.R. infants teachers (the name escapes me) and she hasnt changed nearly forty years later. Mrs Hunter was the headmistress aye? I used to see her when she came into the store a few years back and she hadnt changed much either. She was living in Whickham last time i saw her.
I used to live S Frederick St so all the names and places are familiar. Remember the old shoe shop on Fredda?

I used to live in S Frederick Too, we probably knocked about together?. I think the headmistress was a Mrs Storey or Stokes but cant quite remember. There was also Mr Gallagher who did the football team? As you say a long time a go. But quality times or is it rose coloured spectacles?

There are a few class photos on here but nobody seems to have taken a photo of the school which is a pity.

I was there in the 50s early 60s the teachers I can remember were Miss Tinnion who did the first class, Miss Foster, Miss Phillips was the headmistress. In the juniors there was Miss Bell, Miss Orr, Mr Galley, Mr Leslie, Mr Hurst and Mr King was the headmaster.

Like Stout and Trebor I also lived in So. Frederick St. although just ahead of them in time. We lived at no. 80. What were your addresses? We lived there from 1940 - 1964. I can remember most of the names of the people who lived in our block between Bertram Streeet and Gilbert Street. And NO, I was not named after the street. :D :D
I have fond memories of Barnes Road schools. Miss Richardson was the very strict Infants headmistress. She broke a ruler when hitting my hand.
In the juniors we had Miss Bell 1A,(Very gentle lady). Miss Foster 1B,(a bit more 'hard'). Miss Warren 2A (Friend of Miss Russell, both keen walkers), 2B & 3B were taken by Mr. Galley and Mr. Leslie (Can't remember which way round. Mr. Leslie was disliked for his punishment of lifting your 'short-trouser' leg and smacking the back of your thigh, hard.). Mr. Don Lawson 3A, (the football teacher),Mr. King 4A and Miss Russell 4B. Mr. Elliott was the Headmaster.

I lived at 152 just past olsens second hand shop which was on the corner. with curry shop on the oppisate corner as it still is.

Still drive past potties offy everyday to work. We moved out when the place was cleared. I guess 79-80 not to sure. Seen some great pictures from hartman of the area. Fantastic. I was probably one of the last classes to leave before it was demolished.

I have been researching my family tree. My grandmother's family lived at 162 South Frederick St back in the early 1900s which I realise was a bit before your time. Wondered which block it was. They probably lived in the same block as your house between Bertram and Gilbert st. Thanks for helping to place their home. My grandfather lived in Corbridge st which was fairly near.
Movng forward a bit my pal lived at 117 South Frederick which was on the corner of Gilbert St the same side as the fish and chip shop. Her family was called Taylor.

Delilahcat.

162 So. Frederick St. would have been in the block between Gilbert St. & Barnes Road. I'm glad you mentioned the fish & chip shop because I was going to tell trebor that the Curry shop was Mrs. Densham's chip shop in my day. (Fish & chips cost 1/- [5 pence in todays' money.] 9 old pence for fish and 3 old pence for chips). Olsen's shop would have been Thompsons Red Stamp Stores. On our side corner was Hugh Robsons Bakers.

I went to Barnes juniors from '59 until '62 and remember all the teachers.Mr Leslie was a sadist who had most of us terrified ,using the cane or slipper for the slightest thing.Mrs Gibson's son is head of Harton Tech. Does any one know if Mr Galley and Mr Leslie are still alive?.

I have a photo of Barnes Road taken by the Shields Gazette for an article about the shool closing down. I was one of the last pupils to attend Barnes. Maureen Stokes was headmistress at the time.

Right, there you go people. I hope i've done this right. For those of you who don't know. Mrs Curry on the left. Mrs Hunter on the right and, of course, Maureen stokes, Headmistress in the centre.
