Many of the people posting on this subject must have been apprentices with Noah.I used to live in King George Road 2 houses from the Ridgeway.I thought i had a good memory but i cannot remember any Tips along KG rd.The only building i remember was the wooden church near Park Avenue, with the scout hut along side.I left the area in 1954 did all this Tip happen after that ? The story at the time was the council had bein gifted the land along King George Road provided no commercial building took placxe. In 1954 the tram lines had yet to be removed from the centre of King George road and the buses stopped at the Ridgeway.I do remember straight out from king George Road a couple of miles across the fields there was a paint factory that was a bit of a tip.

Re: Open council tip
Hi rusty.
You left the area even before the John Reid Road was built.
Temple Park was used as a tip for basically all of my childhood, as far back as I can remember.
Certainly all of the 60's and into the 70's.
The old church/youth club at Park Avenue was pretty much derelict by the late 60's, and had moved to a new building on Quarry Lane.
The dump trucks used to enter off King George Road originally, but there was also an entrance where Nevinson Avenue originally ended, by Soane Gardens.
This was before Nevi was extended to join onto the end of King George Road.

Barney, although I can't remember the exact year, I can vaguely remember the opening of that road and would guess it was late 60's.Barney wrote:You left the area even before the John Reid Road was built.
It soon gained a reputation for fast driving and unfortunately it where many people came to grief.
I guess, about the same time would be when the Harton Moor estate sprung up.

Hi malaymac.
I don't remember exactly when the Johnna opened, but think it must have been earlier than late 60's, more likely @ 65-66. Baldy probably knows the exact date.
You are right about Harton Moor, though. It sprang up in the same timeframe.
The ice cream man at the Boys Grammer School was called John Reid.
He got stopped for speeding on the Johnna on the day it opened.
When the cop asked him his name, and he replied "John Reid", the cop was NOT amused, and was going to arrest him for wasting police time, until he showed him his license!!

Re: Open council tip
Just before John Reid road was officially opened, a motorcycle drag race meeting was held on the section between King George Road and Harton Lane. The meeting was part of the old South Shields Sports week and it attracted some big names in the drag racing world. George Brown and his machine "Super Nero" took part along with some other famous dragsters of the time. I remember it being a great day out.
cheers.

You can take the lad out of Shields, but you cannot take Shields out of the lad !!!!!!!!!!!
