few blasts from the past there

the two deaf and dumb lads

were part of the laundarette loafers

had a few battles with the brennans over the years

and ended up playing in the same tyne dock football team

and later trinity house 5 a side

the teams nickname was the borstal boys

think they may have lived at egerton square at the time

toola was a bit of a mate though haven't seen him for years

was in the army cadets with deca deardon

remember geting chased by some boro fans

and geordie kane saying stand and fight as he lead the retreat !

Aye, it was a shock to hear about Deca, but even more so was Paul Millett.
Many of the lads are dying off - Olly, Garters, Deca, Paul M. I'm sure there's more I haven't heard of over here. Sad, really.

Hello Barney.

It is sad to hear of any death but these are just moving into middle age by modern standards. You mention a lad known as Garters, would that be Paul Garthwaite by any chance?

Hi nesr012;

the Garters I mentioned was Kenny Garthwaite, who lived on Gainsborough Avenue (number 99) from the mid-1960's, and went to Brinkburn from 1970-1976. He passed away a couple of years back, in Sheffield, around Christmas time. He had a long-time relationship with Mandy Barrows before leaving Shields.

I've heard of Paul Garthwaite, but didn't know him personally.

Hey thanks for the welcome, i knew Muffa very well, and Ray Coates, or "Katy clip on" as we called him, we all had wa ears pierced at that time and he came a long with a Clip on one Ha Ha, he was a younger than me and Kevin Keeler, what about Grampi Clark, he was a good mate of mine at the time, married June Lawson, Bumper Brenan, Jeff Elliot, , the deaf lads used to hang about with us at times, Kev learned to sign so he could chat away to them, all good crack at the time, ya right about the tough guys, it's just one side of the story, i had a few good kickings in my day, Remember "Tiny" and the lads from the fair, this idiot went down there and "Offered them oot" ha ha, i only did it the once mind, I was born at 57 Tyne lane on the Deans, so i knew all the lads there, Tommy Wells was my best mate at school, then moved to School Loaning, ya Kna, Rykenield way and "No Hope" street, I went to Stanhope School untill i was 14, then had a private education (Kirklevington, Twice, Wellesley Nautical school, Twice, Deerbolt,) but learned in the end, worked for the Probation sevice Social services, I used to work in the d*ug drop in centre at "Chi" near the bus depot, teaching Music and stuff, then spent some years as assistant warden at west Park C.A, (my old school) Came down to Selby in 92 to work at Drax Power Station, doing all the shot blasting and painting, Colin Finley, Kelvin Knowles, Billy Denier, Norman Salah, Jimmy Robinson ( Billy Robinson's Brother) Micky Henry (he still lives down here as well, happy days, Now i Play live music in a Duo for the last ten years, Had Two pubs down here and DJ every weekend, and we have Two Jam Nights, one in Selby and one in Sheffield, not bad for an old fart, well i've prattled on long enough, (hope ya dont mind) Take care ya all,

I believe Mandy lived on Raeburn Road, or in that area. Her father was big Brian Barrows, one of the sandblaster crew, and a hard lad with a heart of gold.

Mandy and Kenny had a least one child - not sure if they had more.
