I used to work with one of the owner's son's and would visit frequently during the late seventies/early eighties.

Their lunchtime specials were always great value for a good old fashioned, wholesome meal.

.

Some of the lasses at Hintons used to get they dinners from there.

One of them used to have to balance a few plates and walk down Fowler St with them.

And then take them all back when they were finished.

A short history.
Elizabeth Johansen was a well known lady of Shields, during the war she had a second hand shop on the corner of Keppel Street at No 10 and lived at No 14 Keppel Street. During this time a Mr Thompson of Vasey and Reed offered to loan her money to buy 1A thomas street so that the family could live together with more room, later on she baught 1B Thomas Street, and made both houses into one.
1A became a boarding house for Servicemen; This is where the two daughters met their future 2nd husbands, Mr Jaan Moppel and his friend Mr Mainhard Kraap, Both from Tallin Estonia. As time passed the 1A became a well respected Cafe,
most of three generations of family served some time working in the 1A Cafe.

Thanks Plantyman and welcome to the boards, hope you enjoy your visits here. :)
I used to work with Dave Oman. Absolutely smashing lad, good humour and easy going.
That was a long time ago. Wonder what he's up to these days. :)
