Hi,

My name is Andy Holmes, I was at Redwell from 1972 until 1976 and I am on this picture sitting front row right-hand side in front of our coach, Barry Acomb.
I have lost touch with nearly all on the photograph except for Neil Gardner who is standing on the back row in the middle. Len Chaganis who sent in this photograph was our captain.
I have this same photograph at home now as well as another one from 1973 when several of us in including Neil and Len where picked for South Shields under 14 rugby team. I will send in this photograph to the website.
This photograph was taken in our 1st year at Redwell and none of us had played rugby before that.
Our first game was against Chuter Ede and we got beat. That first year, we didn't win too many games I recall, but when we went into the 2nd year, we were pretty much unbeatable for a long time.
I hope some of the pther memebers of the team manage to respond.

Andy

Hi Andy It was good to see your comments about the Redwell School Rugby Team photo…. You mentioned that you have another photograph of the town team; I would like to see that one very much. I think it would be of when we visited London and played against Blackheath…Barry Ackham was our Rugby master in the photo and we also had Alan Wearmouth as the town team coach….Fun days!

He's his cousin.

Danny was a very good friend of mine

It was me who first introduced him to Karate.

I took my daughter to Danny's class in the Masonic Hall besides store. The daugter had been to children's karate before and had gained her white, red, green belts. When she started with Danny it was a different kettle of fish all his members were nearly all black belt and most of them were bouncers. My poor daughter had to try and mix it with these hard blokes. She stuck it for a while and held her own but had to leave because of college work. Danny taught you street fighting besides poncy karate. What belt are you Mr. Smith?

Just an ordinary leather one, I never did Karate but I had a lot of friends who were
at the top in the martial arts. Danny used to train at a weight training and body
building club which I formed with a friend of mine. The club members went to
a Bodybuilding contest where some of our lads were in the competition. The show
included a martial arts demo and Danny was hooked there and then. I introduced
him to the guy who ran the martial arts club and he carried on from there. He went
down to London to train with Pof Suzuki and a year later he returned with a black
belt, I knew Danny since he was a kid at school, I am about a year older than him,
he and his family used to live in Lumley Avenue, near the Cleadon Club.
My grandson did Karate when he was about nine, he reached brown belt grade and
just missed out on his black belt when he had to compete with a lad two years older
than him, however; he lost interest when he reached the age of ten and gave it up.
