Yes, I was on the last two launches at Hawthorn Leslies, here's a picture of the "Mediterranean Shearwater" at Barrow in Furness summer 2008, the second last ship launched July 1981. I think the sister ship was called .... something Teal, over to you Pilot.

Would it be Pacific Teal? Fishers have a fleet of nucleur waste ships based at Barrow, I maintain the fuelling systems on them.

Pete, it may be named that now, it may have been launched that, I can't remember. Anyway, I'm glad of this post because its something sensible to post on, I've never seen the shop in such a state, half a dozen idiots in a posting frenzy of absolute rubbish.

It's just a thought, but due to the risk of piracy around the south Red Sea area near Somalia, are there any special precautions for these vessels when carrying toxic waste etc ? I'm not sure if the pirates are sophisticated enough to know what to do with it, but it's the implied threat that counts !!!

May be these vessels don't go any near these days. However a few years ago they did occassionally run back and forth to Japan.

Have not been over to Barrow for about 2 years but then they were still bringing in nucleur waste from Japan for re processing at Sellafield. The large crane on Mr As photo was used to unload the nucleur flasks onto a special rail wagon and two class 20 diesels would haul a single flask up to Carlisle on the main West coast train route and then to Sellafield via Workington.

There was talk of putting some Marines onboard and gun mountings on the bridge wings years ago, but I'm not sure if they went ahead with it.
