Wearside Jack

Post by average len »

Anybody see that programme on Wearside Jack, the hoaxer who sent a tape to the police claiming to be from the Yorkshire Ripper?

Two interesting theories proposed; one that "Jack" was a mate of Sutcliffe's, the other that he was a policeman himself. (The second one I think must be highly unlikely.)

But it's puzzling. The hoax tape was clear and distinct, they even traced his accent to one particular part of Sunderland, yet nobody has ever recognised the voice. His family might have, but kept quiet out of loyalty, but what about all the other people who must have heard him? Did no one at all recognise him?

errrrrr. I not dead. although....I prod myself now and again just to be sure.

Also good sign is to read obituaries just to make sure your not in there.

Phew it big relief when you find you not.

No we suspected Wearside Jack was Uncle. He born and brought up in Shields but moved to yorkshire and had a softer Jordie accent sound very much like Wearside Jack.

He also practical joker and sending police the tape would be the sort of thing he would do.

Alas he died of Cancer a few years ago. So we never find out.

Once an accent, always an accent, no matter where you move to. This bloke wasted a lot of valuable police time, if it was a hoax, something I think we are never going to find out. One thing for sure, what a load of 'BULL' Doris was.>>>> 8)

Actually, having studied linguistics, I can tell you that you NEVER wholly lose your original accent, no matter where you move to! I have lived in France, in Germany and now live in the USA, and although I keep my Geordie accent sort of "hidden" most of the time (simply because nobody would understand me if I didn't !), it always slips in there at times. An expert voice analyst would normally be perfectly able to determine where someone originates from - no matter how one tries to disguise or change their accent. Sure, you pick up smatterings of other accents, depending on where you live, but your basic linquistic intonations remain with you your whole life.
It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.
