Old Cellar Club

Hi all,
I need to pick the brains (if any left) of visitors to the old Beach Rd Cellar Club about 1965/66?
There was a band played there at that time who did versions of old blues numbers (before Mayall was on the scene).
Lead guitar and singer was a short, tubby chap with, I think, a white Strat.
Anyone remember these?
If so, what were they called?
It's been driving me nuts.

you bring back old memories talking about the original cellar club, as to the group, was it the junco partners, they used to play every other week and were quite bluesy, but weren't they all those days.

Your tag alone brings back memories for me.
No, it wasn't the Junco's, but I think a little before their time...I could be wrong.
This particular band, as I said, had a lead guitar and singer who was short and tubby with a pointy nose and usually wore a horizontally striped sweater. I think the bass player (or could have been second guitar) was taller with dark curly hair.
The numbers that stand out in my memory were such as My Babe, Parchman Farm and Reconsider Baby. All standard blues fare a few years later, but at that time were slightly unheard of!

Yes,
Your wife, who knows everything,......(it makes us sound like bigamists cos my wife knows everything too) ......is right.
The old cellar club, in Beach Rd, was owned by Stan Henry who lived, or had offices, upstairs. The same Stan Henry founded the Bailey Organisation which ended up with a chain of nightclubs, and now is back in control of Springs in Crossgate.
At the time when I joined the Cellar, somewhere about '64/'65, the manager was a nice chap called Alf Hobson and his 2nd in command was Frank Hearn who, in turn, ended up as long-standing manager of the 'New Cellar' and 'Chelsea Cat' clubs in Thomas Street.

It's a long time ago, but one of the groups that used to play there was a group that became the Alan Price Combo and then became the Animals.
Eric Price would match the description of the lead singer in the original post.
They had a name before that, but I can't remember it.

They were certainly nothing to do with Alan Price or Animals.
I do appreciate your dredging the old memory banks, this is one of those 'daft things' that drives a person round the bend.
Once again, I hope these comments can stir some 'old-timers'.
