When, the now 8 month old, Junior Holderite was born in South Tyneside Hospital I was told the same thing. The most important thing for me was being there.(especially since I'm going to spend half of his life away at sea) I didn't feel very strongly one way or the other about this symbolic act.
The maternity staff at South Tyneside Delivery Suite are the best you could ask for and if they have decided that this is best for the child and parents then so be it.
I'm sure it wasn't a decision that they took lightly and I'm sure it was a result of a thorough risk assesment and not just an act of backside covering. There are far more important things to enjoy at this special moment in your life and, imo, if this policy prevents a child from inadvertent injury then I feel that it is a small sacrifice to make.

Didn't it also used to be the tradition to hand out cigars?? I don't have any friends who smoke!!

Good luck with the sleepless nights and dirty nappies.
There’s no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing.
