Chris, as far as I know it's closed until the wooden steps are fixed.

Re: Marsden Grotto
It was covered in tonight's Gazette that the Grotto is still closed.

Re: Marsden Grotto
Pity that its closed - the Great North Run usually has all the costal pubs packed to the rafters.
Perhaps they can open while the tide is out - no fire hazard then

Only problem with that theory Stottie is by the time the tide comes back in, everyone is Brahms & Liszt and can't get back topsideStottieCake wrote:Pity that its closed - the Great North Run usually has all the costal pubs packed to the rafters.

Pilot, I played darts for the Grotto from when I was fifteen until I was old enough to sign for the Lake when I was eighteen. About 1962/63 the lift was closed all winter for repair and modernisation so had to use the steps every night.Pilot wrote:I wouldn't fancy climbing the stairs after a skin full
There was no over reaction then about fire risks and that was the days when the bar had an open fire. We are going completly over the top over Health and Safety, if there was a fire surely the sensible thing would be for every one to stand outside on the large patio if it was high tide and wait in safety until the tide receded and they could wak to the velvet bed steps.

Re: Marsden Grotto
Hi Pete, nice to see you back. It's a pity the pub is closed, but I suspect the steps are closed not just over fire evacuation concerns, but because of access for the emergency services as well, which are poor enough now and would be a problem irrespective of the tides. It's easy to criticise "over the top over Health and Safety" in the cold light of day, but if the pub was allowed to open in these circumstances and the worst did happen then people would rightly question why. Let's hope the council gets it's finger out and it's sorted soon.
