Damned shame that Derek .... they make great crab pot bait.
In Oz if you hit a cat or dog (in an urban area) your are expected to stop and maybe see if you can ascertain where the animal belongs.
Mind you, if your car gets any damage you are entitled to contest/sue for repairs from the animals owner.
In that sort of case many people deny ownership.
Cats are the biggest destroyer of native wildlife in this country

Nappies & Politicians should be changed often. Both for the same reason.

Re: Highway Code Question
I found this on Theory Test Advice:
"260. If you are involved in an accident which causes damage or injury to any other person, vehicle, animal or property, you MUST
stop
give your own and the vehicle owner's name and address, and the registration number of the vehicle, to anyone having reasonable grounds for requiring them
if you do not give your name and address at the time of the accident, report the accident to the police as soon as reasonably practicable, and in any case within 24 hours.
Law RTA 1988 sect 170"
Hope that clears it up

Re: Highway Code Question
The same rule applies for pets as it does for livestock: if it can be proven that an owner has been unable to control their pet from venturing onto a highway and it causes a serious car accident, they would be liable for the crash meaning that anyone who had suffered as a result of the stray animal would be justified in contact a no win, no fee solicitors with a view to making an accident claim.

Re: Highway Code Question
It used to be certain animals, like sheep, cattle, dogs but if I remember rightly, cats weren't reportable animals.

Re: Highway Code Question
If you're going to hit a dog, make sure its a big one because the little ones get stuck up your wheel arch and they are devil to get back out.
I once had a strange experience running over a dog, it ran out between two parked cars and I couldn't avoid it, luckily there were plenty of people about who saw what happened, the woman who owned the dog went a bit crazy but she should have had it on a lead and it was dead. Someone phoned the police so I sat tight and waited for them to arrive. Meanwhile three young men probably in there twenty's approached my car from a house opposite, I locked myself in fearing the worst. But they simply picked up the dog, took it to their front garden, dug a hole and buried it. The police arrived within 10 minutes of the accident and asked where the dog was, they were rather surprised when I told them it was already buried. After hearing how the accident occurred they asked my to produce my papers at a police station within two weeks, I heard no more from them and my car was undamaged so I didn't want to take it any further.

Re: Highway Code Question
Not long before I left The UK. I was driving a truck for Argos in North Shields. I got my eye on a young Rotweiller which looked like mine. As I was looking, it ran out into the path of my truck and I hit it! It made one hell of a bang! I got out of the new truck fearing the worst. The lady owner, who was struggling with her small kids, ran up and appologised about my truck! I said to hell with the truck, wheres the dog? Luckily it survived without a scratch, though I was worried and offered to drive it to the vets for a check up. She declined. It worried me all day. I think the official line is that you report a dog, but not a cat.

Re: Highway Code Question
It used to be that you reported a dog because it was licensed but as cats weren't licensed you didn't have to report them.
Its probably changed now though.

Re: Highway Code Question
On the way home from school one day, I found my dog laying in the
street just round the corner from our house. She was still alive but barely.
She'd just had a litter of 7 pups about 2 weeks earlier but managed to
get out of the yard somehow.
I ran home to get my Mom so we could get her to the vet but she wasn't
there. I grabbed a blanket and went back for her but she was dead. I was
so upset that I wasn't there when she died. I just sat there in the street
holding my dog and crying my eyes out. We never found out who hit her.
We managed to save all but one of the pups and kept the one who looked
just like her.
