SAMURAI AT CUSTOMS HOUSE FOR SUMMER

The Customs House theatre in South Shields is to premiere a different type of comedy play by Dirty Dusting writers Ed Waugh and Trevor Wood the show will be performed live on stage as if in a radio studio.

Son of Samurai is about a young Geordie shoe shop salesman who undergoes a life-changing experience when he discovers his ancestors were Japanese Samurai warriors and he has to learn the way of the Samurai.

Customs House director Ray Spencer said: Samurai is really funny, and its great fun watching the performance of a radio play on stage. There will be four actors reading from a script into microphones and, with live sound effects, anything can happen!

Son of Samurai lasts 50 minutes and there will be only 14 performances in the venues intimate 90-seat theatre, which means many fans of the popular comedy duo will miss out unless they book early.

Trevor Wood, who with Ed Waugh also penned the outrageous comedies Good To Firm, Raising The Stakes and Waiting For Gateaux, said: We got the idea to do a radio play live a few years ago when Ray staged a play at the Customs House that had been broadcast on Radio Newcastle. It was a different way to entertain people and there was a lot of fun in the proceedings.

The Westovians in South Shields read Son of Samurai at an informal gathering a few months ago and it was great crack.

He continued: Samurai was offered a slot at the prestigious Latitude Festival in Suffolk this summer and weve had an offer to take it to the Edinburgh Festival but we want our people in the region to see it first. Were sure theyll enjoy it.

Jackie Fielding, who directed the duos Waiting For Gateaux and The Revengers, will be at the helm for Samurai. She said: I read it and jumped at the chance to get involved. Its going to be a cracking show.

Anyone wanting to eat prior to shows should book immediately. The cost for pre-show lunch and a ticket for the matinee is only £10, while a pre-show evening dinner and show ticket is only £15.

Son of Samurai runs from Friday, September 7, to Saturday, September 29, and tickets, which cost £6, are available from the Customs House box office on (0191) 454 1234.
