I remember reading something a while ago that the 14 days grace thing was not true. You were supposed to have the new disc in place as soon as the old one expired.

cheers.

SMB is right there is no 14 or 15 day leaway.
Its either in date or out of date.

You can display your new tax disc. If you think about it until the old one is out of date you've paid TWICE.

enjoy

you need to be carefull... if you find a stroppy copper..

technically, there are two possible offences.

failing to pay the duty, and
failing to display a valid duty licence (tax disc)

I think you will find that on the first one, the notion of two weeks leeway, or "its in the post" is an old wives tale... there is no legal leeway period

and on the second offence of failing to display a valid tax disc, the tax disc is only valid for the specific period of either six or twelve months up to the exact time of expiry, therefor if you cover up or obscure your "current" tax disc with the new one before its start date, you can be done for "failing to display"....

This is a true story from last year, my friend was driving down the A55 to Bangor and he got blinked off a mobile police camera, they pulled him up and told him he had no road tax, thy are now connected to the DVLA database and can tell if you have a valid tax disc or MOT, he had to pay £200 on the spot fine or the van was to be impounded , he was told to find his own way home, if he didn't cough up un 7 days the van would be crushed. He went to a cash machine and got the money to pay to allow him to continue on his jouney.
Is it rough justice or correct, he didn't have any tax and the police say its to get the uninsured , non MOT and non Tax cars of the road

When you think about it, it was probably one of those number plate recognition cameras they are using nowadays. In any event, why should the law abiding motorist who pays his road tax, insurance and has a valid mot certificate subsidise those who dont, or wont pay up ? Its a nightmare when these people are involved in an accident when they shouldnt even be on the road in the first place. If they havent paid up, they shouldnt be on the road.

cheers.
