Waterloo Vale

Post by lynnp24 » Tue Jul 14, 2009 7:30 pm

Any one had any relatives living in Waterloo Vale?
My grandmother and her mother lived at number 9 for quite some time.

Came to South Shields recently but I there is now a shopping centre on the site.

Was it a highly populated area, does anyone have any info about it?

Thanks

Lynn

Hi Pilot

Many Thanks for that.

Looking at it as it is now I couldn't imagine what it may have been like. My Family lived there at the time this picture was apparently taken in 1920's and 1930's.
I really appreciate that , and did you say you had some more? ( I'm being cheeky now!! If you don't ask you don't get!!))

Thankyou

Regards

Lynn

Used to go to St Hilda cubs in early 50s at St Hildas institute in Waterloo Vale. Can remember a pub was opposite it, a lad called Ridley lived there and he was in the cubs same time as me. When he left school he got a job at Westoe Breweries and he drowned when he fell in a vat of beer, can still remember the sick jokes at the time "he got out twice for a p*ss" and another one "westoe breweries brew a beer with a full body".

Many Thanks again for those Pilot. You can see the atmosphere & charachter of the place. Do you or anyone know if waterloo Lane was near waterloo vale . I presume it was in that area, as I had relatives there as well.

And thanks for the story Jarrow Pete, thats some way to meet your maker !!!!

The photo in the clipping above shows a car belonging to an old friend of mine, who is long
deceased. The car is the front one of the two on the left hand side. It was a very rare car which
he had bought cheaply in about 1955. Unfortunately he suffered a stroke and never drove it. The
car stood there for a lot of years before it was finally removed by someone.
The car was a "London Talbot" and belonged to one of the town characters of the time, he was
Irish and his name was Joe. He used to own a (greasy spoon type) cafe opposite the station on
Mile End Road. I'm sure I saw a photo of him standing outside his shop, on these boards but
it was a long time back.

Thanks for the reply baldy Smith

Lovely car

I'm trying to figure out which is King Street. Bear in mind I have only been to South Shields twice. Are any of those places still there or is that all been demolished for the expanse of the wonderful shopping centre??!!!!

Thankyou for that Pilot

I was interested to see the grave yard, that must be the site of the shopping centre where BHS is. As I saw some newspaper article saying when they were digging the foundations found several bodies etc..

Lynn the new store is the other side of Coronation Street opposite the grave yard, it covers the whole block , with the car parks it extends down to Waterloo Vale.
