New Blues Club in East Boldon- Featuring Gordon Smith

Post by Bluesboy »

The Blues Lounge

The Blues Lounge is new blues club opening in the northeast. Started by two of the regions finest blues duos; The Hokum Hotshots (Jim Murray and Peter Mason) and Lee Bates and Billy and Newton along with Michael ‘Fruit-Lips’ Watson of the Last Gasp Spasm Band, the club aims to bring the finest blues performers from the UK, Europe and the USA to the Boldon Cricket Club, East Boldon.

The club has already hosted a few concerts from artists such as British blues legend Simon Prager to Doug MacLeod and Steve James from the US.

The organisers have decided to run the club on a monthly basis with shows held on the first Friday of every month starting on October 2nd with the fantastic Gordon Smith.
Once famously described by the great John Peel as the ‘foremost white blues guitarist in the world’ Gordon is a native of the northeast but has spent much of the last 40 years residing in London. Gordon’s northern gigs are infrequent and this is a rare chance to catch this truly staggering guitarist playing solo. Tickets are £8 and are available from the Blues Lounge website: www.blueslounge.webs.com or by contacting Lee Bates on 07765634041.

Other shows feature performances from the wonderful Ray Stubbs and His Amazing One Man Blues Band (Nov 6th) and in December (4th) Gypsy Bill Williams and Del Potter. Gypsy Bill is a blues singer with a staggeringly soulful voice and is not to be missed!

Tickets for both of these shows are available from the website.

The Blues Lounge presents: Ray Stubbs Amazing One Man Blues Band
Ray Stubbs, the greatest one man-blues-band in the world, brings his unique show to the Blues Lounge, Sunderland Road, East Boldon on Friday 6th November.
The heyday of the one-man band was 1890-1920, but a century on we still have this truly amazing musician who surrounds himself with a set of instruments which he employs so expertly it has to be seen to be believed. Ray’s hand-made set-up is comprised of: bass drum, side drum, snare drum, garabakas, washboard, cow-bell, hi-hat, sock cymbals, crash cymbals, bass pedals, kazoosaphone, jug, Mississippi whistle, harmonica, 6-string guitar (x2!) 12-string guitar and, of course; stunningly effective Blues vocals.
In 1981 Ray won the one man-band competition in Utrecht, Holland. He was also presented with an extra award for the largest one man-band in Europe (by incorporating the most instruments into one song without stopping); a record that still stands today!
No mere novelty act, Ray mixes the sounds of the Mississippi Delta with Jug band, Ragtime and rocking Chicago Blues. Ray is widely recognised as being one of the most authentic bluesmen the UK has ever produced and his skills have brought him acclaim across the UK and Europe.
This is a rare chance to catch Ray playing in a Blues club setting and should not be missed by any lovers of real, down-home, Blues!
Support comes from Lee Bates and Billy Newton, one of the finest duos on the Blues circuit.
Doors open at 8pm and tickets (priced at £5) are available via the website: http://www.blueslounge.webs.com or by contacting Lee Bates on 0776 563 4041, or you can try your luck on the door!
