SOUTH SHIELDS 0 : DARLINGTON 1883 3.

Post by passtheball » Sat Jan 05, 2013 10:11 pm

As hoped for today at Filtrona Park, there was a very good attendance for the game, of some estimated 600 or thereabouts present in my opinion, and it was down to the ground staff and volunteers from the supporters association that the match was able to be played at all, in view of the saturation that the pitch has recently received.Thankfully dry weather for the most part of the week has been an added bonus, although as fully expected the surface was soft and playing conditions very heavy and energy sapping as a result. That said the game was reasonably entertaining for the most part and Shields although they tried manfully to match the visitors and their commitment could not be questioned, the difference in both skill factor and general ability was plain to see and why Darlo are top of the league. Darlington had a header smack off the crossbar as early as the fifth minute and started to pressurise Shields from the outset, and in the 9th from a corner took the lead in what was a poorly conceded goal from a loose ball toe poked into the net in a trickle by the post, when a concerted effort to clear danger was not taken. Shields had an effort off the Darlo line on 21 from a corner, but the visitors continued to find their men well and continued to press forward and give the home defence plenty to think about. Graham had a splendid shot for Shields on 35 from distance tipped over the bar in a great save by Bell, struck with power and direction as Shields tried hard for an equaliser. Two minutes later Ramsey had a great chance from a set piece, but his header went high and handsome over the bar, much to his and the home crowd disappointment. Winter in the Shields goal made a fine quick reaction stop in the 38th, from which Shields had a drive saved full length by Bell in the 41st in the Darlo goal, a good save and good shot. Winter in the next minute made a fine catch from a close range headed effort and just before half time a Darlo shot was put narrowly past the upright.

Shields subbed Henderson with Burnicle on the 60th, and his pace up front brought some energy into the Shields attack. Darlo continued to dominate the play as the second half progressed and it was no great surprise when they doubled the lead on 70, but again with a goal that was preventable by the defence, when danger was not cleared and a tap in at the far post put the game really beyond any doubt. Adam Robinson subbed Brown in the 72nd but three minutes later a third goal in again poor circumstances for the defence finished an unequal contest. A third substitution on 80 saw Ramsey replaced by Paul Robinson for his first appearance. Darlo had a goal disallowed for offside and hit the upright late on. In retrospect Shields have to find some defenders of better ability and very quickly to try and remedy matters at this late stage if at all possible in the teams long standing problem department. They have a good goalkeeper in Winter, who played well today, but to match him some better players are required where necessary.

1. Winter. 2. Smith (c) 3. Pickering. 4. Renshaw. 5. Brown. 6. Graham. 7. Wightman. 8. Henderson. 9. Ramsey.10. Coe.
11. Feasey. Subs. 12. Kane. 14. Burnicle. 15. Anzevui. 16. Robinson. A. 17. Robinson. P. MOTH. Smith.

Special thanks to the Darlo supporters for their greatly appreciated generosity today and grand sportsmanship, they are a real credit to the Northern League, best wishes are most sincerely meant for the teams success and promotion this season.

My personal estimation only of the attendance today Laidler, and not an official number at all, and as for the Shields contingent present, your personal presence to encourage and support etc etc was really missed yet once again by all and sundry, but well seen you managed to attend otherwise on line in true spirit thereafter as ever as a real Mariner's staunch and true faithful supporter as ever as per your ever predictable and expected comments ........

Maybe the Darlo lads thought that shields were gonna turn them owa and didnt fancy the trip.

or maybe the constant bellenderism on the internet has made a few think twice before comin.

one thing i certainly daint na, how the 400 "missin" supporters are the fault of the club???
Brought to you in association with Lawsons Timber.......
