SOUTH SHIELDS 2 : SUNDERLAND RCA 4

Post by passtheball » Wed Dec 19, 2012 12:32 am

Shield gave their supporters an initial glimmer of hope this evening with two excellently struck goals in the opening 14 minutes by Graham from 25 yards on 5 into the far top left corner, and Coe made it two on 14 with a great shot, and for the first 30 minutes pressurised the visitors going very close on two occasions to increasing the lead. A desperate goalmouth scramble saw the ball almost get into the net but at the last second the RCA goalkeeper just got a hand to it to turn round the post. Shields pressed hard and kept the game in the RCA half for half an hour, but despite going so close again could not make the killer third goal and get a real grip on the game. RCA came back strongly and an unfortunate misplaced header by Renshaw on 34 went into his own net when attempting to clear. Burnicle for Shields had a great shot saved on 35 in what was a most competitive and entertaining game. Just before half time Shields failed to clear their lines and once again true to form paid the penalty, as RCA equalised though amid claims of offside. On the break a Shields header was put wide of the upright. In the second period RCA took the game to Shields, and in the 62nd minute took the lead when once again after a couple of failed chances to clear Shields were punished and fell behind. Kane was introduced in place of Stoyanov on 70 as Shields chased an equaliser, but on 75 a 4th goal in controversial circumstances with allegedly a handball on the blind side of the referee part of the build up, however protests were waved away. Ramsey and Marshall subbed Feasey and Coe on 82, and just about the last action of what had become a disappointing turnaround in the scoreline was in the 87th when Kane shot wide of the post when sandwiched between two defenders. So, from a most promising start in what were heavy and difficult conditions for both sets of players, with a two goal lead surrendered and what looked at one stage that just maybe Shields could do themselves a power of good and go on to take the points failed to happen. No Mellish or Clarke in defence due to flu, and Robinson A and Bell L also due to work circumstances, in a much changed defence as was available.
Shields also fielded a new signing M. Brown at 5, no details as yet to hand and new goalkeeper James Winter played well on his debut, despite the scoreline being not down to him.
1. Winter. 2. Smith (c) 3. Stoyanov. 4. Renshaw. 5. Brown. 6. Graham. 7. Coe. 8. Henderson. 9. Burnicle. 10 Wightman.
11. Feasey. Subs. 12. Pickering. 13. Marshall. 14. Ramsey. 15. Kane. 16. Lay.
