SOUTH SHIELDS 0 : DARLINGTON RA 0

Post by passtheball » Sat Aug 11, 2012 8:44 pm

All square at the end of 90 minutes today in a goalless draw and a replay on Tuesday at RA's Brinkburn Road ground, DL3 9LF for satnavers, kick-off 7.30pm. Little to enthuse about the game, and the loss of Ramsey due to a bad tackle after 25 minutes was a blow, that followed an earlier incident of studs down his ankle that went unpunished, Shields lacked guile and penetration to get past a resolute RA defence that was overly physical at times, and the finishing touch was absent on three first half occasions, when chances were not taken. However no Peter Kane or Jonny Wightman were available, Tony Coe suspended and David Colvin injured all told their tale, what was available upfront toiled manfully but failed to make their mark. Feasey wide left made some fine contributions but lacked support when it counted. The second half was a lack lustre affair, and a most uncharacteristic miss by skipper Barclay in the 93rd minute, with virtually the last kick of the match. A splendid through ball to him was cleanly collected and with a fine turn around the goalkeeper with a empty net beckoning from some 15 yards left of the penalty spot, he powered a drive inches wide of the right post, when he had time to pick his spot, and the chance to wrap things up was unfortunately gone .....On reflection, in view of recent happenings, Shields it can be said are fortunate to have a team and a ground on which to play, and are still in it and have a second chance to put things right on Tuesday.
1. Barlow, 2. Smith, 3. Fenwick, 4. Rue, 5. Bell, 6. Feasey, 7. Scott, 8. Chapim, 9. Ramsey, 10. Barclay ( capt ) 11. Cunningham, Subs. 12. Kane, 14. Edwards, 15. Wilson, 16. Talbot. Subs used Kane, Wilson and Talbot.

Thought it was a solid enough start to the season :) :) . A bit of early season rustiness, but that was to be expected I suppose. Chapim was fantastic in the middle, and we looked dependable at the back. Given pre season it was a cracking performance really =D>

It was on "ok" performance which lacked any cutting edge up front in attack. Unfortunate that Ramma went off injured early on, but he should of put us 1 or 2 up before he did with good chances. Options then, without Peter Kane or the "come when I want" Tony Burnell was Paul Kane and young lad Wilson. Thought neither of them stepped up to the plate and will struggle more so against better, div 1 opposition. Hope ramma not out to long and Peter Kane back for Tuesday. Good battling midfield display today, although think Gil gives the ball away too much by "dribbling" in the wrong areas, like edge of our 18 yrd box! Barclay should of won it for us, don't think he could believe it himself! Feasey pick of the players today, good running with ball and produced great end product crosses that we really should be getting on the end of. Defence and keeper not really troubled but did well in what they had to do, good clean sheet! Hoping for a slightly better attacking display in the replay!
