Where did you hang out?

Post by Pilot »

When I was a kid living in Marsden we had quite a few hangouts one of which was the Black Path where we would spend most of our summer holidays fishing for sprats or catching crabs, another haunt was the Dungeons up Lizard Lane, where did you all hang out?

Pooter, it was great as a kid living in Marsden our street was right on the cliff tops so we grew up on the beach and in the caves, winter and summer and on a foggy night we had Souter Point Foghorn to send us off to sleep, happy days.

Whic way you have described where you lived Pilot, it sounds like you lived at old Marsden beside Souter Point where the old co-op store was.

No not old Marsden Village Cisco, but I do remember it well, my family moved into Grotto Road when the houses were brand new, I was very young at the time but we lived there for ten years till 1960. I dont think you can get closer to the cliff tops in Shields and Souter point was easily heard in foggy weather. Later I lived in digs in Stanhope Road from 1964 to 1968 then I spent seven years at sea. For the past 31 years I have lived in Harton only about 150 yards from the place I was born.

Excellent Pilot  I still do that now, I'm down there at every low tide
in the summer collecting peeler crabs and putting my lobster pots in the
gullies.
The only downside is ?? work has to come first  while i'm at
work a mate of mine from horsley hill, pinches my lobsters.
But being the dole fiddling, two houses, 4 kids, 1 car, parasite that he
is, he only knows where I put a couple of my pots.
Anyway spent most of my youth hanging about westoe seats, and in the
winter the old westoe bogs.

We used to hang out at Tyne Dock near St Marys church. In the summer we'd go to Marsden beach around Camel Island or the old quarry at Marsden.
By the way Pilot you were asking about other board members. Mr Angry has an irrational obsession about people who live at Horsley Hill. He usually refers to them as parasites and seems to think he is the only person in Shields who works and pays tax. If his 'friend' is as bad as he makes out why doesn't he report him for fiddling instead of complainig..

I used to hang out a lot in Grotto Road, had a lot of friends there.
We used to ride the horses in Hanna's field which is now the caravan site, went caddying at the golf course a couple of times, I was'nt keen on that.
Used to sell them golf balls we found in the field at the top of Grotto Road.

I used to hang out a lot, untill I got arrested for it, it doesn't pay to show off. These days my nick name is "Limpy", can't think why.

Cisco, I remember doing all those things as well, who did you know in Grotto Road, I knew all the kids that lived near me between 1953 to 1960, still run into one or two of them now but not often.

These are some of the lads I use to know in Grotto Road Pilot,
Alan and Mickey Brown, Billy Brown, Stewart White, Jimmy Tiernan, Alan waggot, Peter Hayes.
That's a few to be going on with Pilot.

Yes Pilot Peter Hayes did have a younger brother called Barry.
I think Peter went to sea as far as I know.
Stewart White served his time as a gas fitter in North Shields, he's living in Jarrow, Jimmy Clements is living in Stewarts old house.
I've no idea what happened to Alan Waggot as I've never seen him since I was 16, I know he lost his mother Peggy a couple of weeks ago.
Don't know what Billy Brown is doing last I heard he was living in Whitburn.
What part of Grotto Road did you live as the street was pretty much divided between the top end near the field and the bottom half and did not mix much.

I lived at the bottom end the first semi on the right as you came round the bottom of the bank. Alan Wagget lived down in London for a while but the last I saw him was about 40 years ago, I read in the paper about his mother.
