rippons was next to the STAGS HEAD you used to get the trolly bus from there to horsley hill

The only Rippons I remember was in the late 60's and it was next to the Britania, opposite the town hall, however my boss lady tels me that it was originally at the bottom end of Fowler so maybe Tonnee wasn't totaly wrong after all.

Played a darts match in early 60s in an upstairs room at the Stags Head and the barmaid had the drinks sent up in a dumb waiter as there was no beer pumps in room.It was near to Rippons we used to walk there from Marsden to save the the bus fares so we could buy 3/8" dowling and feathers so we could make our own arrows for our bows that were all the rage in late 50s on Marsden hills.

I can confirm that Rippons was originally at the bottom of Fowler Street a bit further down than the Stags Head. The place where it stood is now occupied by the newer buildings of the Denmark Centre and Prince Georg Square.

It sold all kinds of sports gear, it had two floors, upstairs is where you would buy your darts Pete, also all kinds of knives of which you would be arrested for today.

It also had a builders yard at the back of the premises which supplied all the builders in the town.

recently bought by one of the barmaids i think

As kids, we loved to play with bows and arrows. We used to make our bows out of branches cut from the trees on the Lawe Top, but arrows made from them were rubbish. When we could, we would scrape together enough money to go down to Ripons and buy a 'proper' arrow - with a feather flight instead of ones made from cardboard - now they were really something!
