I can remember the Norwegian ferrys on the tyne.

They used to sail from the Tyne Commision Quay up near Percy Main.

There was the two Bergan line ships, the Leader and the Venus and the Fred Olsen Line Blenhiem and the Braemar.

I can also remember the big whaling factory ships that used to be tied up near,I think, Redheads yard.

The Whaler factory ships were the Southern Harvester and The Southern Venturer they used to go into the docks next to the Mill Dam. I believe they were owned by Christian Salveson but not too sure about that. We used to get a good view of them from Commercial Road.

They seemed to tower over everything around and dominated the skyline when you drove along the lower road.

When I was a nipper I have a faint memory of some Uncle of mine, one of the Shetland side of the family, who sailed on the Southern Harvester. One time it was in dock, somewhere near Redheads, us kids were invited on board. We had to walk up the 'ramp' at the stern, where the dead whales would be winched up and we could look around the 'facilities' that involved the slaughter and butchery of those huge creatures.
I think I must have been about 9 years old (?) but I still remember the horrible stench of death on that vessel!

Who mentioned the Whaler ships ?

Happy New Year to you ALL

When I had a go at taken snaps about 30 yrs ago, I'm sure I've got some shots of the Venus coming up the river.
