Can anyone remember seeing the wreck of a ship that came ashore on the short sands between the groyne and the pier.
It would hve been in the late 60's/early 70's

I remember that night well Kellan, I was also in the crowd, 1963 it was and the worst night you could imagine, freezing cold and blowing a gale, you could hardly stand up against it. There was hundreds down there watching the rescue.
The main rescuers were the Sunderland coast guards, and the man at the forefront of that rescue was Ken O'neil who was at the front in the water the whole time pulling the men off the lines, but being a quiet man not liking any fuss did not receive the credit he deserved, that went to someone else.
