LATE 1940's METAL 'MOUNTAIN' ...

Does any reader remember the rusted and buckled great pile of old scrap metal plates during the late 1940's that was by the railway line at the little beach off River Drive, where the yacht club is based now ? This was a magic play place for us Lawe Top gang of Beacon Street and immediate area, highly dangerous of course, and susceptible most probably to movement, but such dangers were not realised. On looking back, crawling into this great pile was a dare and a challenge. I wonder if a photograph exists with any reader, or does anyone know the possible source of one - for old times sake ? No doubt WW11 scrap of some kind left there for disposal after the beach and seafront was opened to the public after 1945. Any help would be much appreciated, cheers.

It would seem that not many people had cameras in those days, and if they did, the photos they took would have to be 'special' in some way to justify the cost of the film, developing and printing. Today, with digital photography we are accustomed to taking masses of photos, most of which will be deleted and few will ever get to be printed, so in future, we may still not benefit by having as many records of the past as we imagine.

Unfortunately it seems that any recollection of this 'metal mountain' is indeed beyond memory, much less a photograph being most hopefully available from those times of the early post war days, till I continue to hope that someone, somewhere ......
