Watching an old series on Sky came across Martin Shaw in a program called George Gently,this is supposed to be set in South Shields ?
anybody tell me more.?

I guess the episode you are thinking of involved an 'arab' lad. I think it was supposed to be in Shields but the filming was done in Ireland. The later series was filmed in the North East.

fantastic series and very witty at times. Just a look from Martin Shaw to his sidekick speaks volumes.
I have read the Gently books and the character in the books bear no resembalance to the TV series.

The inside filming is done at Wallsend where the docks used to be. The set is shared by the filming of Vera.

Spoilt for me when he mentioned the "Police Service in one episode. That term didn't come in until the 1990s.
