I remember sitting in Pub it was called the

"Festering Carbuncle Cocktail Bar."

just round the back from where Shields Gazette is.

It have cocktail waitresses, olives and everything, very snazzy for the 60's.

Very select you not let in less you wearing cloth cap and muffler.

First in area to put little umbrellas with cherries in your pint.

The "Douglas Vaults." I remember that.

Oh how I wondered what went on in that place.

When I was little boy I imagined someone called Douglas giving

gymnastic display.

Douglas

I used to get into the Douglas Vaults in the late fifties. The room upstairs was always packed, They used to serve Samson Ale.

No one has mentioned "The Tram" that used to be in the market place. :?:

baldy. Why did they serve Samson ale? Was this the only bar he could get in? Maybe he caused damage to the other bars???

Samson

Post by baldy.smith »

A few pints of that and everyone thought they were Samson. I may be mistaken about it being Samson, it may have been Strongarm. They always seem to run out of draught they were so busy; they then started selling the more expensive bottled beers (was it a con?) I always did my best to help them run out of draught beer. Alas these days I am teetotal except for the odd glass of wine.

I rememember The Douglas, they used to have jazz groups on upstairs on a weekend.

Samson was a vaux's beer.

the douglas vaults had a dodgy rep, it was the place to score a bit of nigerian black (allegedly, not like today where it may as well be in the local shops it is that common) in the sixties, i used to like this pub and the mechanics, the beer used to be that brew from the hartlepool brewery, i though it was sampson and the strongarm was the best bitter version.

What was the name of that VILE lager from Hartlepool? It tasted of wax to me. :drunken_smilie:

It called "EarAle."

Got taste because Chief Brewer would keep pencil behind his ear and give vats a stir with it to see if it was ready.

I remember the Mechanics before they renovated it, when you went through the door on the left, at the bottom of the room there was a juke box to the left of it was the gents toilet when you went in, there was a step down and there never was any lights on and it was pitch black and you were wading through water.

The bar maid was a peroxide blonde girl painted up like a doll.
I heard later that she died of cirrhosis of the liver. :(

Wonder if that is the same Richard who had a pub in the Big Market in Newcastle (seeing as this thread is about pubs in Shields market place) he also had a coin stuck to the floor. Also had a Mynah bird that used to shout obcenities to everyone. I used to repair and maintain gaming machines in pubs and clubs back in those days; covering an area from York to Berwick.

Not sure about the pub in Newcastle baldy, but I seem to remember he had a Myna bird. I did hear about a pub in N/cle with 50 pences stuck to the floor. It must have been Richards.
