Re: the comando pub
Mr Smith that photo reminds me of the way to the snooker hall it was real dingy but fun or you could go to it from the market
Re: the comando pub
You can see what looks like a bridge down the street, that was the way you got into the
Odeon cinema from the main entrance in King Street. You had to go up the stairs then
across that covered in footbridge into the main cinema. i believe in later years it became
a snooker hall, not sure of that though.

Re: the comando pub
.
That's it Mr Smith.....Thank you
It was one of the first, if not the first, pub I drank in.
I can remember playing my first game of darts in there....
I can remember buying a pie and being s**t scared when the cops came in one on there walk throughs.
Something you don't see now, but why not?
Then I found out later, one of the old guys we played darts with WAS a copper......
He must of knew we were underage (15-16) ?????
LIFE?
It's was better then.

That's the Golden Lion on the left of the photo, North Street Youth Club used to be above it.

We also used to drink in the Garricks Head which was behind King Street in the other direction towards Mile End Road. Also The Bridge which ran from Queen St through to King Street.
Remember Terry from her days at the Brig. She wore her hair in a distint nineteen forties style.

Was it the bridge that was under the railway line and you had to hold your pint to stop it spilling when a train passed.Delilahcat wrote:We also used to drink in the Garricks Head which was behind King Street in the other direction towards Mile End Road. That's the one.
I am trying to remember where a pub called The Avenue was. I can remember what it looked like but the location escapes me. Overto you Mr Smith.....

Re: the comando pub
There you go Pete, The Bridge.
I have no memory of a pub called The Avenue, but there are a lot of Shields pubs on Avenues.

Re: the comando pub
Yes Sam it's all coming back now. My friend's mam was a barmaid at The Old Highlander on the other side of King Street. Anyone remember that one. Obviously it was a pub we couldn't go in as Suzi's mam knew us.

Have no recollection of The Avenue at all, can remember The Mechanics and the Eagle Vaults, both well known "knocking shops" at the time.

Re: the comando pub
Yes those pubs had a certain reputation but we young 'uns used to visit in the hope of seeing some exciting goings on. Never did though.
You correctly identified the location of The Highlander. It had no 'frontage' just a doorway and a sign.

wish i had been about then and met the kittenDelilahcat wrote:We used to meet up with the same people doing the same pubs every time. Drinking was relatively cheap then. Times change. In the sixties I started drinking at the Mechanics and the Duggie like every other under age drinker in Shields
Re: the comando pub
Quite a few other pubs have disappeared or been renamed over the years.
The Tram, The Locomotive, The Mermaids Tail. The ones I used to frequent
most were the Douglas Vaults and The County, both used to get packed to
the rafters and there was always some good free entertainment at The County.
After a good nights drinking, we always finished up at the Star Of India on
Ocean Road for our Chicken Curry and rice, when we finished we would always
order the same again, I could eat like sless back in those days.
