what do expats miss the most

Post by geordielass »

stottiecakes from raes on stanhope rd, just like my mams hot out the oven with real butter, not like the large bread buns greggs pass off as stotties. a walk on the pier,or marine park, and a drink in the grotto on a nice summer night.

South Shields may have its bad points, with a bunch of parasitic Labour councillors running the show.
But its my town, and I wouldn't swap it for anywhere else in the world.
South Shields, I was born here, and I'll d*e here

Well said Mr Angry.

I miss Rickets
Nits
The weather.
Some of the prettiest women in the uk (till they open their gobs)
Walking down Ocean Road on a summers evening and popping in to all the pubs down and all the pubs back.
Finding somewhere to p*ss when all the pubs had closed.
The heroes in the winter who would walk home after clubbing when it is snowing in a shirt no coat.
Bumping into friends you knew at school and after five minutes realising WHY you never kept in touch.
Myrna (wife 300lb's) says she loves Shields and would love to move back here when I retire.
I point out that Shields has a summer which starts 31st of July and finishes the 1st of August.
But for all this I was born in South Shields and it is a lovely place with nice people.
They must be nice coz there are so many Non Sand Dancers on these boards.
(I'm off now for a sob and a lay down)
I always value Pilots wit and input

Memor, I'm not an ex-pat. just someone who has lived away from Shields most of my adult life, but the place still exerts a massive pull on me. When I come home, I find myself always drawn to the harbour and looking out to the piers and Tynemouth, the least changed places, but so many other landmarks of my youth have now gone, and sadly the same is true of the people - either dead or so changed by age we would not recognise each other if we met in the street. I feel like a ghost doomed always to search for that which has gone.

I suppose that's why I find this site so good, I have never met any of the people who contribute, but we all seem to enjoy returning to the past on occasions - kindred spirits if you like. I think I'll follow your example , lie down and have a good sob. :(

I left in 1981 and have only visited a couple of times in the last 10 years, but I miss:
Stotties
Dicksons saveloys (even though I am vegetarian!)
Listening to the foghorn while lying in bed.

i would have killed for a beef burger when i was in Thailand, mince and dumplings, pea soup. tripe and black pudding and pease pudding, full english breakfast with fried bread, and english mustard.
zip me up in my oilskins and jumper.
no more down the docks i'll be seen.
just tell me old shipmates.
i'm taking a trip mates.
and i'll see them on fiddler' green.

Ive been away 10 year now and miss so much, mostly the familiarity and memories when you go places, greggs pasties, savaloys from dicksons, proper currys, sunday dinner at the office, the seafront, marine and bents park, the old buildings like the market place and the town hall i could go on all night :)
